JULY 25, 1995 SESSION DESCRIPTIONS



1. Tribal Assumption of Federal Programs Through Compacting Agreements: This session will provide an overview of compacting under Self-Governance amendments. It will describe the background, the difference between compacting and 93-638 contracting, and the implications for all Federal departments as they interact with and serve tribal governments. Presenter: Richard Wilson, Bureau of Indian Affairs

2. Cultural Issues in the Workplace: The process of acculturation will be defined and related to American Indians making the transition from a tribally oriented environment to the non-tribal world. Presenter: Jonny BearCub Stiffarm, National Center for State Courts

3. Tribal Approaches to Our Environment: The role of Tribal Government in the 21st Century will be discussed in relation to environmental issues. Discussion topics will include clean air, clean water, and recycling and their effects on the American Indian community. Presenter: Sadie Hoskie, Navajo EPA

4. Finding the American Indian Information Superhighway: This session will discuss the importance of American INdian unity networks and how you can access, join, and participate. Presenter: Ben Sherman, Western American Indian Chamber

5. Connecting with American Indian Youth: This session will examine pre-college programs aimed at working with American Indian youth and provide insights on eliminating potential recruitment barriers. Ways in which Federal employees can get involved will be addressed. Presenters: Theresa Halsey, Boulder Title V Indian Education Cathy Abeita, American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES)

6.  Tribal Sovereignty and Trust Responsibility: This session will discuss the historical, legal and social backgrounds of sovereignty and what it means to American Indian Nations. Presenter: David Lester, Council of Energy Resource Tribes (CERT)

Closing Ceremonies - All Conference attendees Appreciating Diversity: Traditional & Contemporary American Indian Perspectives: This closing session will highlight three American Indians who will discuss their tribal traditions and beliefs and how they deal with the conflicts of traditional culture and the fast pace of technological advance.
