AIPC July 10, 2002 Quarterly Meeting Notes

Before the meeting started, Helen Littlejohn's public affairs supervisor welcomed the group to the Department of Education, and notified us of a new Executive Order just signed by President Bush appointing an American Indian education task force/committee to address American Indian education issues and recommend how additional funding provided by the EO should be spent. Rick Williams was named to head the committee.

1. Clint Le Beau, Chairman, Colorado Indian Education Association, who was scheduled to address the AIPC about the CIEA functions, cancelled due to last minute scheduling problem.

2. Nominations for New AIPC Officers were as follows:

Chairman, Robert Moore

Vice-Chairperson, Helen Littlejohn

Secretary, Chi Mui

Treasurer, Jane Wilson

ACTION ITEMS: If any nominees (those who were unable to attend the meeting) are not interested in serving, please contact Becky.

Once the list of nominees has been finalized, absentee ballots will be e-mailed to official members so that they can be received by October 2 - our next quarterly AIPC meeting. In-person voting will be available to members present at the meeting who have not voted via absentee ballot on October 2, 2002.

3. AIPC-sponsored training, scheduled for November 19, 2002 - a planning update. Lori Windle and Vi Rogers had revised the training agenda. One of the changes discussed among the group was to invite Elouise Cobell to speak about the trust case as a backup. Another change was to ask Rick Williams to discuss the Tribal College and Universities (TCUs) topic, along with Judy Gobert, professor at Salish Kooteinai Tribal College, and David Dunbar, Dept. of Education. David Lester was discussed as a potential speaker on tribal energy advances for the economic development panel, along with others who may speak to wind technology, gaming, tourism and communications.

ACTION ITEM: Grace Sage will ask Elouise Cobell if she would be willing (no cost) to present the Cobell case,  in addition to Tex Hall speaking on Tribal/Federal relations in the wake of the Cobell case.

Concerning the AIPC partnership with the FAA training scheduled for 2003, it was decided that many topics from our sister group in Oklahoma could be used for the FAA training, with the addition of health and education topics.

4. The task of going through the AIPC membership lists to update it is almost complete, thanks to Dale Lujan and Kitt Lente.

5. Last meeting minutes were approved.

6. The next quarterly meeting will be October 2, 2002 at the Department of Energy located in the Denver West Complex at Cole Blvd., Building 15, hosted by Kitt Lente.
